The history of Father's Day dates back to 1909 in Spokane, Washington, when Sonora Smart Dodd heard a sermon about mothers on Mother's Day. She thought that fathers should also have a day. Her father, a Civil War veteran, raised her and her five siblings after their mother died. The first Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, the month of Father Dodd's birthday. While in the Catholic countries of Europe, it has been celebrated on March 19 as St. Joseph's Day since the middle Ages.
